Barbara Culp, Democrat
Candidate for: Genesee County Board of Commissioners - 2nd District
Response:*
The entire country is in the mood for real change. One only has to look at the Democratic nominee Barak Obama to see that people want fresh faces and ideas. We in the 2nd District are no different. Though we appreciate the public service from those who have held office before, we believe it’s time for someone new. Having someone new sounds good. However, I know that experience means a lot.
Barbara Culp is ready right now to serve as 2nd District County Commissioner. First of all, though a 40 year resident of Flint, I recently retired from the State of Michigan as a Sergeant-At-Arms for the Michigan House of Representatives, appointed by then Democratic Speaker of the House Bobby D. Crim in Lansing, MI. Having worked with both State Representatives and State Senators, she knows as much as many of the Office holders in State government. I know how to get our fair share of state dollars back to Genesee County and the 2nd District. Having worked with elected officials from various backgrounds and political views along with urban and rural representatives.
I am currently employed as Family Service Councilor at Gracelawn Community Cemetery where I assists our community through bereavement and witnesses some of the financial strains that grips our community today. I currently serve a President of Sisters United, Inc., a member of the NAACP, President-Elect of Eta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Flint Urban League and the North Saginaw Street Business District Association. Douglas J. School of Cosmetology, with license from the State of Michigan.
Making sure that we use every bit of the shrinking dollars to fulfill the needs of a community who is suffering under severe economic hard times. For example, as more and more employers increase co-pays and deductibles for Healthcare or drop the benefit altogether, we need to make sure that the GHP (Genesee Health Plan), which the citizens of Genesee County voted to fund, are broad enough to meet the needs of those it was meant to serve.
